What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Buying Digital Gold

advantages and disadvantages of buying digital gold

Buying gold no longer always means visiting a jewellery store or keeping coins and bars at home. Today, you can buy gold online in small amounts and hold it digitally.

This convenience has been made possible through Digital Gold. But if you are wondering how safe Digital Gold is in India, it is important to understand both its security arrangements and investment risks.

In this blog, we look at the advantages and disadvantages of buying Digital Gold, its safety, and regulation in India.

What Is Digital Gold?

Digital Gold allows you to buy gold online without taking immediate physical possession of it. The corresponding physical gold is generally stored in vaults by the provider or its partner on your behalf.

How Does Digital Gold Work?

When you buy Digital Gold, you pay for a specified value or quantity of gold through an online platform. The provider records your holding digitally while the corresponding physical gold is stored on your behalf.

The exact process can differ across providers, but it generally works like this:

  1. Choose the amount of Digital Gold you want to buy.
  2. Make the payment through the platform.
  3. Gold equivalent to your purchase is allocated according to the provider’s terms.
  4. Your holding appears digitally in your account.
  5. You can later sell it or request physical delivery where the provider offers this facility.

What Are the Advantages of Buying Digital Gold?

Digital Gold makes buying and holding gold more convenient because the entire process can be completed online. It can also allow you to start with smaller amounts instead of buying a full coin, bar or piece of jewellery.

Here are some of the key advantages of buying digital gold-

  • Easy to buy: You can purchase gold online without visiting a physical store.
  • Small starting amounts: Many platforms allow purchases with relatively small amounts.
  • No storage at home: The corresponding physical gold is generally stored in a vault by the provider or its partner.
  • Easy tracking: Your gold holdings can usually be viewed through the platform.
  • Online selling: Depending on the provider, Digital Gold can generally be sold through the same platform.
  • Physical delivery: Some providers allow eligible holdings to be converted into coins or other physical forms, subject to minimum quantities, charges and delivery conditions.

What Are the Disadvantages of Buying Digital Gold?

The convenience of Digital Gold does not remove its risks.

Here are some of the digital gold investment risks that you should be aware of:

  • Regulatory limitation: Digital Gold is not regulated by SEBI as a securities-market product.
  • Counterparty risk: Your investment depends partly on the provider and other entities involved in storing and managing the gold.
  • Operational risk: Problems with the platform, processes or service providers can affect transactions or access.
  • Price fluctuations: Gold prices can rise or fall, so returns are not guaranteed.
  • Buy-sell difference: The buying and selling prices may differ, which can affect your returns.
  • Additional costs: GST and, where applicable, delivery, minting or other charges can increase the overall cost.
  • Provider-specific conditions: Storage periods, redemption rules, minimum delivery quantities and other terms can differ between providers.

SEBI specifically cautions that Digital Gold may expose buyers to counterparty and operational risks.

How Is Digital Gold Regulated in India?

Digital Gold is not currently regulated by SEBI as a securities-market investment product in India. SEBI clarified in November 2025 that Digital Gold/E-Gold products are neither notified as securities nor regulated as commodity derivatives.

SEBI also stated that securities-market investor protection mechanisms are not available for investments in these Digital Gold/E-Gold products.

This is different from SEBI-regulated ways of getting gold exposure, such as:

  • Gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)
  • Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs)
  • Exchange-traded commodity derivative contracts

Check factors such as:

  • Provider and seller details
  • Gold purity
  • Storage and vault arrangements
  • Insurance arrangements, where applicable
  • Buy and sell prices
  • GST and other applicable charges
  • Physical redemption and delivery rules
